Cheap Flights

Crete has two international airports Heraklion and Chania (and in the near future Sitia in Eastern Crete will also start handling International traffic).

Most people flying to Eastern Crete fly to Heraklion Airport as it is the closest and most convenient. However it is always worth checking the prices for Chania airport as well. Since the main road has been built it will only take you about one and a half hours to get from Chania airport to the Heraklion area by hire car.  Generally though there are more flights to Heraklion and this means that it is normally cheaper to fly there than it is to Chania. Also there is an airport in Sitia that has daily year round flights to and from Athens. In the future it is planned that it will also start handling charter flights from international airports.

There are two options to fly to Crete either by charter flight or by scheduled flight.

Charter flights are generally cheaper but you will normally stay either for one week or two at flight times that are fixed by the holiday company. When getting a flight only deal from a charter company you are actually buying seats that are left over from package holiday companies. Therefore they tend to get cheaper the later you book them (assuming that seats are still available !). You can fly directly to Crete on a charter flight from most main airports in the UK.

Scheduled flights are normally more expensive but you can plan your times and length of stay to suit your plans. There are now 2 options for scheduled flights from UK to Crete. Either you will fly first to Athens and then from Athens to Crete or now you can also fly directly from London or Manchester to Heraklion, Crete.
